Ensign Peak

Youth Hike to Ensign Peak

 August 25, 2015
By Rachel Tucker

The young men and young women hiked to Ensign Peak Tuesday night for our joint activity.  Everyone had a good time.  The hike was hard and Sister Downey said, "I would rather die." LOL  Brother Dean and Brother Dickison did good.  The bishop was absent for the trip. We we got to the tope, the view was beautiful.  We made it in time to see the sunset.

Camp Esther 2015

Camp Esther

August 21-22, 2015
By Victoria Parry, age 11

On our way up to Camp Esther, my mom (ChaillĂ© Parry), Jennifer & Trissy Jacobsen and I were eager to learn about Queen Esther.  When we got there, we got to our cabins and picked out our beds. The cabins were split in groups.  Our ward shared a cabin with the Welby 6th ward.  We unpacked and then got ready for the fireside.  We sang fun camp songs like "Baby Shark" and "Alligator" and also sang a song called "Esther's Courage." Then we shared our ward skits.  One ward did 100 dresses from the book and it was about courage.  My ward did one called "The Invisible Bench."  It was when everyone goes and sits on an invisible bench but then someone says, "Oh, but I moved it over there yesterday," which makes everyone sitting on the bench fall to the ground.
An elderly couple did a lesson on Queen Esther.  Queen Esther is one of the most beloved characters of the bible. Esther was a Jewish queen of the Persian king Ahasuerus.  Ahasuerus is traditionally identified with Xerxes I, in the time of the Ahasueres empire.  Esther was Jewish and needed to have the courage to stand up to the king who wanted to all Jews killed.
After the fireside, we all went back to our cabins.  In my cabin, we played UNO and went to bed. Good thing I brought an air mattress because the beds are wood.  I couldn't sleep.  I tossed and turned all night long and then my mattress deflated in the middle of the night.  The next day we had to wake up at 6:00 am.  We had breakfast. They had really good hot chocolate, pancakes and fruit.
On the way to the bathrooms, a deer walked right past us.  It was so close that you could almost reach out and touch it.  The deer was really big and pretty.  Then three more deer walked past all of us, and a little squirrel ran across my foot.
After breakfast, we were divided into groups.  Then we did classes.  My first one was about fasting.  When we fast, we fast for those in need or maybe for something that we are going through.  We have to remember that we only have to fast for several hours, but some people go a lot longer without food because they don't have any.  That is what our fast offerings go to, to help those in need.  We also pray while fasting.  So the next time you fast, make sure you always think of those who need your help.  I say a prayer almost everyday.  I say it so I don't feel so nervous about school.  Like one time I prayed because my dog was missing.  We were driving around the block looking for him.  Then when I said my prayer, my dog turned the corner.  So I am very thankful Heavenly Father answered my prayer.  Then at the end of the lesson we each got to pick out a pen and a little piece of paper.  I got a purple pen and we put the cute paper in the middle of the pen.
Then our next class was about the temple.  We learned how to do baptisms for the dead.  When you are 12, you are old enough to do baptisms for the deal.  When it's your 12th birthday, you can't just got and do baptisms for the dead.  You have to get your temple recommend.  In 1840, Joseph Smith said that those who die before hearing the LDS gospel, could have baptisms done for them.  Joseph Smith's plan for the temple included the design of an unusual baptismal font in which they could perform their proxy baptisms.  I thought the 12 oxen's underneath meant age 12 (because that is how old you have to be), but actually it represents the 12 tribes of Israel.  3 are looking north, 3 are looking south, 3 are looking west, 3 are looking east.  We had to say what our favorite temple was and I said all of them.  They also asked us if we had ever been to an open house.  I have only been to one which was the Ogden Temple.  But every temple throughout the world has baptisms of the dead. Then at the end, we made little necklaces.  There were pictures of temples.  We got to choose one. I chose the Salt Lake Temple. Then we put this clear thing over it to make it look professional.
Our last class was about not talking mean about people.  It was my favorite class.  We had to take a tube of toothpaste and squeeze it out onto a plastic plate.  So we squeezed every single drop out onto the plate. Then they told us to try to put all the toothpaste back into the tube.  We were all looking confused.  We were saying it was impossible.  The teacher said it was easy squeezing it out, so it should be easy to squeeze it back in.  So we all tried, but we still couldn't put it in. Then she said, "I had you do this because once you say something mean either out loud or on the internet, you can never take it back."  So the toothpaste was an example because we squeezed it out and we couldn't put it back in.  I went through cyber bullying this summer.  I would cry everyday.  Someone was posting things on the internet about me saying never be friends with me and stuff like that.  I have to remember who my real friends are and that they know the real me.  I will always try to remember not to talk bad about anyone! Everyone in that class was crying.  I wanted to cry, too.  We got gummy worms at the end of that class.
Then it was time to say our good byes.  At Camp Esther, I made really good friends and learned a lot about the temple and Queen Esther.  I had a very fun experience.  When you ever get the chance to go to Camp Esther, I hope you have a great experience like I did.

I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream for Ice cream

Ward Ice Cream Social

August 24, 2015

Life can be hard, life can be dreary and life can be challenging.... for every one of us.  Everyone is trying to take life one day at a time as we work at perfecting our eternal self so we can return home to our Father.   In April 1979, Marvin J. Ashton taught, "Many of us set up roadblocks to progress and contribute to our own unhappiness while we wait for others to seek us out and offer help. Negative attitudes lived with today cause stagnation, misery, and bitterness tomorrow. It is unproductive for those who should be anxiously engaged in seeking the abundant life to nurse personal hurts. We are all God’s children. If we love Him, we will feed His sheep wherever they may be found, without regard as to our own personal plight or situation. Often we can best feed others when we are hungry ourselves or not completely comfortable in the fold that we presently occupy. Very often those who are hungry, helpless, and cold can best be rescued by those who have been through the same exposures. Marking time or stalling should not be indulged in by the weak, weary, uncertain, and unrecognized. Instead, there is a healing power as we use our energy in action, in service, and in lifting others."
Tonight, members of our ward family were able to bond over ice cream. We all need each other and building those friendships (especially over BYU ice cream) can help us on our journeys.  Let us remember that as we feed the Lord's sheep, we our feeding ourselves.  Tonight it was so fun to feed each other ice cream, but there are so many ways we can feed His sheep. We can
  • include and invite others
  • really listen to others
  • serve others
  • love others without judging
  • try to understand others
  • pray for others
  • demonstrate patience for others
  • compliment others
We can remember that we all need to be fed and we all need each other to make it back home to the Father.

Anchored in Christ.... Girls Camp 2015

Why We Need Anchors

The purpose of an anchor is to keep a ship safe and secure at a desired location or to help control the ship during bad weather. However, to accomplish these vital purposes, just having an anchor is not enough. The anchor must be solid, dependable, and used properly at the right time and place.
Individuals and families need anchors as well.
Adversity can come as a great storm to blow us off course and threaten to cast us against the rocks. But sometimes we are also in danger when everything appears to be safe—the winds soft and the waters smooth. In fact, we can be in the greatest danger when we are drifting and movement is so slight that we scarcely notice it.

The Gospel Is Our Anchor!!!!

A Summary of Camp.....by Constence Rasmussen

Girls camp was a very spiritual and fun place for all of us girls! There was laughter and tears. Wednesday when we got up at camp, we all worked very hard together to put up all the tents. After all of the tents were up, all of us girls went and ate lunch. Shortly after one small group of girls went horse back riding, which was a fun experience for all. The second day started with a nice breakfast, then the other group of girls went horse back riding. Later after lunch, we all took a small hike down to the lake where we had some very heroic leaders that saved some of the girls when their boats were moved by some powerful winds causing the boats to get stuck in some grass and moss. Shortly after all of us girls hiked back to camp, the bishop arrived. He ate dinner and played a really intense volleyball game with most of us girls. It was all of the  young woman against the priesthood where it ended with the young women losing! When the young women lost, Constence and Rachel had to sing Frozen's "Let it Go" in front of everyone. After, everyone walked over to the fire pit where there were some very spiritual testimonies given. Early Friday morning after breakfast,  another group of girls went horseback riding for the last time. Then, everyone packed up all of their stuff and we started on the journey home.

Other Camp Memories:
  • Girls had fun in the game room.
  • Girls enjoyed swimming in the pool.
  • The "glow-in-the-dark" craft the girls attempted utterly failed.
  • Also, the first volleyball game was ALSO lost (girls against Bro. Dean by himself), which is what led to the second game. The result of the first is that they had to refer to Bro. Dean as "honorable". That is why they wanted a rematch. It was best of three, and they got slayed every time.
  • It poured like CRAZY the first day, right as sister Carrington was blowing up her monster air mattress.
  • Skits were also fun. Girls had to use props and work in impossible words like "antidisestablishmentarianism" while rapping. And the young women totally pulled it off.
  • McKenna and Adrianna had fun with knives. We thought somebody might get shanked, but we did all leave without blood being shed. Kate even tried to put on a hard face for the knife picture (see pictures below)
